Day 23 – July 26th – Fortune, NL and Area

Day 23 – July 26th – Fortune, NL and Area

We woke up to initially overcast skies that by 9 AM cleared away to allow the sun shine through with no clouds in sight.  There was heavy rain at times overnight that left some puddles around the park.

Vance and Joan looking for 543 million year old rocks!
Today was planned as a casual day with not much on the go so we went to town and purchased some goodies at the grocery store and visited the Fortune Head Interpretive Centre.  This was mainly a gift store with a small self-guided museum that included a walk through a history of the area ecological beginnings from some 543 million years ago to more recent times.  Geologists around the world have recognized the Fortune Head Ecological Preserve as the best place on the planet to see fossils that tell the early story of evolution – neat!

Fishing Shed on Stilts!
We then took a walk along the waterfront to see the “Fortune Fishing Sheds” that were built with “lungers” (round sticks) dating back to the 1800’s.  There were many different kinds and sizes.  One, which struck me, as kind of funny at first was a shed with “Enter At Your Own Risk” on the door.  As we walked past the first time we could hear voices coming from inside with one man standing in the doorway talking to people who I thought were working on the inside.  On the way back I noted that no one had moved but they were still talking and bantering away.  I think this was the local coffee house where the guys met to tell stories – cute.

We then drove over to Grand Bank some 6 km away to visit the Provincial Seamen’s Museum which is affiliated with “the Rooms ” Museum of St. John’s.  There were many artifacts from the land and sea used by Newfoundland families fro the 1800’s to the mid 1900’s. They also had three small temporary exhibits on Coins, The Great Seal Hunt Disaster off the coast of NL and the Titanic sinking.
Did not know Red Rose made Coffee!!

We then had a bite to eat at “Sharon’s Tea House” which was very good and was the first place I had come across that did not have fries on their menu!  Better diet for me for a change J.

For the last visit of the day we drove to the Lighthouse near Fortune which is part of the Ecological Preserve.  Just a beautiful view of the ocean and we could actually see Miquelon off in the distance, the visibility was amazing.

It was back to the park and while I did some reading, Diane, Joan and Vance went for a little walk along the Horsebrook trail that starts in the park.  After a bit they returned for Happy Hour and to prepare for tomorrows trip to Bonavista.
