Day 11 – July 14th – Twillingate, NL

Day 11 – July 14th – Twillingate, NL

Last night we were serenaded to the sounds of iceberg cracking and thundering.  We heard it two or three times during the night, like the sound of a rifle!!  Cool sounds that get your attention right away.

Joan and Vance heading to the Boat
Do you see the silhouette of a face?
Today was a day for close encounters with icebergs and whales.  We went with Twillingate Adventure Tours that did an excellent job.  Our Captain was Perry and our guide was Perry’s, "Uncle Bert" – Great People!!

Synonymous with "The Rock"

A little bit of Canadiana

Off we went at 10:00 AM and found our first Humpback whale almost immediately after leaving the harbour.  It was feeding on Capelin underneath the Long Point Lighthouse!  We then went around the point to get up close to some Icebergs; Uncle Bert said that last years iceberg season was a bust as they only went out 6 times and he went on to say that this year was totally different and we are a part of history as no one can ever remember seeing this many icebergs in Twillingate!!  He also said that it takes about 6 years to arrive to this area after they leave Greenland.
A shelf full of "Mummers"

We went by a number of icebergs off the coast of Twillingate, close enough but not too close.  Unfortunately I know if I lived here I would be trying to get really close and probably even climb on them!!  Good thing I don’t live here!! J While buying our tickets to the Whale and Iceberg Tour I noticed a shelf full of Mummers, explanation is here: http://www.mummerstheword.com/home.php .
A "Little" Tail

On our way back to the harbour we stopped by a little cove and found two Humpback whales feeding on the Capelin.  The whales are truly majestic animals.

Hello There!
Following our high seas experience it was “That Time” and off we went to the Tea House and Bakery.  Unique little place that was developed from a converted garage under a house. Of course there were some fresh baked cinnamon buns and a Partridgeberry Tart calling our names from the shelves.  We smelled, we saw, we bought!!

Back to the campsite to help Vance with a squeaky hitch and a little rest; chasing whales and icebergs can be exhausting!!

Fishing for Growlers
Something for the freezer and Rum!
Diane, Joan and Vance went back down to the beach to take a few more pictures of icebergs and found a guy from Ontario (Perth area) in the water up to his armpits with a chain trying to capture a small growler that had rolled close to shore.  Originally he was only wet to the knees but oops, slippery rocks!

He spent the next hour or so giving his Costco Bag full of 10,000 year old ice away to people in the campground that wanted some.  His wife said NO MORE for their freezer!!  Hmm sounds familiar.

We ended the afternoon with Joan and Vance and a couple of Rum and Vodka drinks – all in all a very good day.
