Day 12 – July 15th – Touring Day
Woke up to the sound of icebergs cracking and moaning in the harbor,
something I don’t think you would get used to even living here. Really a unique and wonderful sound.
Today we were off to Fogo Island to tour about and also to “Complete the
Circle” (I will explain later).
Following about a 60 km drive we boarded the vehicle ferry for the 45
minute ride from Farewell to Fogo Island.
Cost was $26.35 for the vehicle and the four of us – not bad really and this was a return fair!!

Diane or Joan had heard or read about the Fogo Island Inn tour in the town
of Joe Batt’s Arm, so off we went for our first stop. It is a very modernistic building, which is
furnished entirely from local craftsmen. Link for more information: http://www.cbc.ca/nl/features/fogo/. The rates go from $875.00 to $2,475.00 for a
suite, with meals included the rates go from $1,275.00 to $2,875.00 per
night. Mind you that is for 2 persons J. After our arrival we found that
the Inn had stopped doing the tours, but we were more than welcome to have a
coffee overlooking the ocean they were very gracious. There were a few icebergs in the distance so
we sat and enjoyed. I think we should
have enjoyed just a little more as we found out each coffee was $5.00 plus tax,
hmmmm, oh well, live and learn, it was very nice though.

Our next stop was a bite to eat of course. Based on recommendations from the staff at
the Fogo Island Inn we went to Nicole’s Café just down the street. At first we were hesitant based on the prices
at the Inn, but this was a very nice establishment with excellent Fish and
Chips and Hot Turkey Sandwiches. During lunch we were “entertained” by a Canadian Military Search and Rescue Cormorant Helicopter doing some training. I guess they had heard how good Nicole’s Café
was because they landed in town and dropped in for lunch – cool!!

Next stop was the Wireless Relay and Interpretation Centre
(Marconi Site) in the town of Fogo. Very
interesting display of memorabilia and artifacts. The station actually was one of the stations
that had received the distress call from the Titanic in 1912. http://www.townoffogoisland.ca/home/39
Following our guided tour it was time to head back to the ferry to
return to Farewell and then to Twillingate via Moreton’s Harbour. We can now say we have been “All Around the
Circle” as per the song! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I's_the_B'y
